Today I am thankful for many things. I am taking the time today to share one of them with you. Project Sweet Peas. I have not only been blessed with their heartfelt gifts of memory bags for both of my daughters when they died in the NICU, but I am now a proud volunteer. Here is there recent Facebook Post.

[Do you REALLY know where your donation is going?

The generosity of people never ceases to amaze me.  Even in one of the worst economies since the Great Depression Americans are giving to others in need.  Most of us have a few charities that we donate to every year.  It feels good to donate and read about all the wonderful things your money is being spent on.  But have you ever really stopped to take a look at exactly where it’s going?

All registered non-profits in the United States are required to make their financial information, usually in the form of their tax documents, available to the public.  This is to provide accountability to you, the people funding their operations.   A majority of people never take the time to really look at them though.  If you are like most donors you simply head to their website, read about all the great things they are doing and then hit that ‘donate’ button without a second thought.   Those who do stop and take time to really see where the funds go may be in for a bit of shock.

Unfortunately many large non-profits also bring in tow a large amount of overhead costs.  Your donations not only have to fund the actual cause,  but they also fund things such as salaries, benefits, building rent and maintenance, utilities, vehicles and much more.  Is that what you intended your funds to pay for?   Their website will never tell you this information.  It will tell you that they have spent X amount on benefiting others but if you don’t know how much money they raise in a year you have no way of telling if they are really spending it wisely.  If your favorite charity makes 2 million dollars in revenue a year but only spends$ 500,000.00 on the actual cause it’s supporting would you still want to fund them? Or, would you seek out another nonprofit to receive your precious hard earned dollars that is in better management of their funds?

Project Sweet Peas is proud of our very low overhead.  We take every step we can to insure that your donations are not mismanaged so they can be spent on our actual mission.  Did you know that Project Sweet Peas has no paid employees?  The board and 100% of the division coordinators work on a volunteer basis.  They donate their time, effort, experiences and many times tears without expecting anything but knowing they are making an impact in return.  Project Sweet Peas does not own nor do we lease any building space so we have no overhead related to those things.

Thank you to all of our supporters.  We want you to also take pride for donating to a non-profit where your funds are going to such good use. ]

I will do everything in my power to help them thrive. They became a glimmer of light on my darkest days. No matter how many hours I put in, how many items I make and donate, I will never be able to repay them. I even started a Keepsakes store for mother’s who have lost children. Any money I make, I use to buy supplies to make more, then the rest goes into items for donation to my local chapter. www.facebook.com/waitingforhappinesskeepsakes
